Are you watching the SyFy show The Expanse? If you like sci-fi, you should be. I came across it only recently, while googling the news about Fox Network’s Firefly challenge to Joss Whedon. The blurb I read claimed The Expanse had similarities to Firefly and was worth a look. So I swallowed my skepticism, and found the first season free for streaming with Amazon Prime. Apparently in any country except the US, Canada and New Zealand you can watch the show on Netflix, but in the States, the second season is currently airing on the SyFy channel, with back episodes available on Amazon Prime.
I’ve now binge watched the first eight episodes and let me start off by saying – The Expanse is not Firefly. Admittedly there are some similarities, it’s a gritty show, set in a future where humanity has colonized the solar system (I’m being careful to avoid spoilers), and there is one story arc involving a civilian spaceship crew, but that’s about it. You’re not going to find Joss style quips on this show. But what you will find are excellent multiple parallel story lines, in a believable universe, with great writing. The production values are high, with edge of your seat action scenes.
If I were to compare the show to others, imagine Blade Runner mixed with Babylon Five and BSG, with some light Firefly seasoning . . . another movie with similarities just occurred to me, but I’ll keep that to myself for now, to avoid spoilers. But don’t just take my word for it. Check it out for yourself, and thank me later.
Bottom line – I’m thoroughly captivated by this show, and am enjoying it immensely. It took me some time to warm up to the detective story arc (note the multiple story lines comment above), but now I’m loving it. As of March 16th, The Expanse has been picked up for a third season, but apparently it’s still struggling to find its audience. I hadn’t even heard about The Expanse until two weeks ago, and SyFy doesn’t appear to be doing much to promote it. So many good sci-fi shows have been cancelled in their prime due to poor numbers, you owe it to yourself to check it out and if you like it, help get the word out about its existence. And maybe someday, when people are talking about new shows and are looking for comparisons, The Expanse will rank amongst the established favorites.
