Is anyone else watching the new Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency on BBC America (not sure if it’s showing in the UK)? I’ve made a discovery about myself *cough*, a new discovery about myself – I am not a frothing at the mouth purist, who cries out in anguish, and then feverishly reaches for his electronic device to express his outrage on the Internet, when a show or movie deviates even slightly from its source material.
I like not knowing what’s going to happen next, I enjoy spin-offs, I’ll even occasionally read a work of alternate historical fiction. Full disclosure, I enjoyed the extended cut versions of the Lord of Rings movies – all 682 minutes of them. There I said it. And I stand by it. My point being, I find it easy to enjoy someone else’s take on a theme or universe that I love – with one caveat – as long as it is done well.
The new Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency is done well. I’m three episodes in and I’m thoroughly enthralled with their take on Douglas Adams’ wonderful literary creation. Enough familiar characters and themes abound to make it all instantly recognizable to fans of the books, but also plenty of new antagonists and delightfully baffling plot deviations to keep you keen for more.
Another confession – I watched the entire first episode without realizing that the Todd Brotzman character was being portrayed by Elijah Wood and not Daniel Radcliffe. But apparently that’s a thing. Radcliffe – Wood Confusion syndrome. RWCS. ™.
Interesting, the Stephen Mangan one done by the BBC (UK) was very good. Interesting that they have made a US version. It will be interesting to compare when (IF) we get it over here.
Biggest difference, just off the cuff – the BBC America version, while still retaining the humorous aspects, is somewhat more intense. I chalk that up to AMCs involvement.
It just so happens IDW Comics has just released their version in a 2 issue volume called Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency: The Salmon of Doubt. If searching for it at the local comic shop is too much effort, it is available online as well. https://readcomiconline.to/Comic/Dirk-Gently-s-Holistic-Detective-Agency-The-Salmon-of-Doubt
