Stopped by Boston Comic Con 2014, yesterday after lunch partially because Jewel Staite (I had no idea she was so tall), was there, but mostly because there were a few of my favorite comic illustrators I desperately wanted to meet (click on photos for captions) . . .
Sergio Aragone – creator of Groo the Wanderer. First off – he looked exactly as I imagined! Secondly, I brought along a Groo comic I bought back in 1991, not only did he sign it – he told me how he came up with the story behind that issue – that was 23 years ago! Incredibly friendly, can’t say enough nice things about him.
Karen Hallion – Illustrator. She does the most amazing mashups, my favorites are the Tardis/Disney Princesses and Calvin and Hobbes as the crew of the Serenity. Important note – ask for ID before you start to gush, chances are you’re talking to her sister. Trust me . . .
Scott Wegener and Brian Clevinger – creators of Atomic Robo. Only recently discovered Atomic Robo – fantastic comic!
Ben Cadwell – creator of the Dare Detectives, amongst other things. Ben is such a mind blowingly amazing artist, it quite literally makes my stomach churn. Kind of a jerk in person though. Lol. Totally my own impression/opinion. But the conversation went kinda like this “all the sketches in this book are $40, you like that one? Yeah, sorry that’s my favorite, I’d have to charge $80 for that one. Oh, that one? Hmm, nope that’s no longer for sale . Nope that’s $100, that one? Weeeellll, I think someone else wanted that one, but I guess I’ll let it go . . .” Insane? Quite possibly, but talented – absolutely.
Loved her costume, fully intended to give her website a mention and then promptly lost her card – ARGH!
Chris Parent and Jackie Musto’s – creators of Lady Skylark. WE LOVE JACKIE. Honest to goodness one of the nicest people you will meet at a con and also one of the best illustrators. You have to check out the steampunk flavored Lady Skylark if you haven’t already.
