Battle for Wesnoth – the Dark Hordes
Finding halfway decent games for the IPad is a chore. Potentially it’s just a case of being spoilt for choice but I’m finding the whole ‘sifting the wheat from the chaff’ thing tedious.
Anyway, here’s a couple games that I have found that I actually enjoy playing with any regularity.
First recommendation is the Battle for Wesnoth – the Dark Hordes.
A turn based strategy game reminiscent of Steve Fawkner’s Warlords from the late 80s, you capture cities, produce armies and attempt to conquer your enemies. It’s a fun way to kill a couple of hours. I actually like the mechanics better than Warlords. The game is not a cake walk despite the easy learning curve, every little thing matters, like terrain, time of day, weapon choices, superior numbers, etcetera. That you can level up your troops is just the cherry on the strategic game cake.
Support from the programers appears to be good as they continue to add content and tweak the app. You can play either skirmish or campaign mode, if you do play the campaign mode and win the Siege of Elensefar, please drop me a line and tell me how you did it. I can make it all the way to the top of the map with a couple turns left, only to have skeletal hordes appear out of nowhere, block all the wall spaces and keep me from taking the final citadel before time runs out.
